I think its useful to define the age groups of young learners, because the teaching approach differs widely for each group. I use the following guide, adapted from Cameron (2001):

  1. Age 2 – tots
  2. Age 3-6 year olds – very young learners
  3. Age 7-9 year olds – young learner
  4. Age 10-12 years old – older learner

Also, if you’re researching for resources on the web, its useful to know how younger learners are defined the United States:

  1. Early Preschool (Ages 2-3)
  2. Preschool (Ages 3-4)
  3. Pre-Kindergarten (Ages 4-5)
  4. Kindergarten (Ages 5-6)
  5. Elementary School (Grades K-5)
  6. Middle School (Grades 6-8)
