Today, I want to introduce you to a free utility website I’ve just discovered for compressing Microsoft Office documents.
Sometimes I’ve had the need to compress Microsoft Office documents, like Microsoft Word or Microsoft PowerPoint files.
The kind of tips I’ve read online about compressing Microsoft Office documents generally involve compressing the images in the file. (Here’s how you can do that from within PowerPoint).
However the data savings using this method have been relatively incremental.
Enter WeCompress.
Simply upload or drop a Microsoft Office document, image, or PDF file to the WeCompress website, where the documents are compressed in the cloud, and made available to download.
In several cases, the Microsoft PowerPoint files I uploaded were reduced in size by over 80%.
In my usage case, I wanted to embed a Microsoft PowerPoint document into my website, so it could be viewed on a webpage. However, the maximum file size for the Microsoft Office document viewer on my website was 10 megabytes. Using WeCompress, I was able to reduce the size of that file from 12 megabytes to under 2 megabytes, without any visible loss in image quality.
Compression tools can also be useful for saving storage space on your computer hard drive.
I keep copies of all of my lesson plans, and associated resources on my hard drive. By compressing the files, I can save a lot of valuable hard drive space. Smaller files, are also going to be easier to email and will open more quickly on your computer. So there are a lot of advantages in compressing your files.
Next time you need to compress some kind of file, give WeCompress a try.
