Yesterday, I shared why I don’t use overt competition in my VYL classrooms. Today, I want to share my favourite quote on competition, it comes from an Amazon.com reviewer of Alfie Kohn’s book ‘No Contest: The Case Against Competition‘.

“I find little problem with the validity he demonstrates for his ideas, but was terribly disappointed in his lack of ability to understand the true paradigm shift where people see their own possibilities dramatically expanded by others rather than limited by them, where the ultimate sadness of the destructive nature of competition is highlighted by the amazing things that can happen when people with different ideas get together.”

Its this paradigm shift that inspires me to bring something different to my classes, starting with showing the very youngest of learners a different way.
